Inguinal hernia

I have a lump in my groin

Inguinal hernias are most common in boys and men (only 10% of cases affect women). They may be present at birth or develop later in life, when straining, heavy lifting, coughing or obesity increases the pressure within the abdomen, applying strain on the muscles in the groin area.

Although small, asymptomatic inguinal hernias may be managed conservatively, larger and symptomatic hernias will require surgical repair. Surgical repair can be carried out via a traditional cut in the groin or by keyhole surgery. Traditional surgery can be performed under local or general anaesthetic but a keyhole repair will require a general anaesthetic. The keyhole repair has the advantage of a quicker and more comfortable recovery. You can discuss with Mr Jourdan which type of repair is best suited for you.
